Helping innocent animals find love away from home

Welcome to Love Away From Home. We are  an organization dedicated to placing innocent animals who are displaced from their forever homes due to an incarcerated parent  into temporary, loving  homes within their community.

Calling all animal lovers.

Love Away From Home is dedicated to saving animals from impoundment (or worse) when their loved ones are incarcerated. Too often, animals who belong to incarcerated parents are impounded and, depending on the duration of incarceration, end up euthanized when the shelters are full. This practice is not only traumatizing to the pet, but devastating to their loved ones.

Keeping innocent animals safe and happy is our goal. Family reunification is our mission. Sign up today to temporarily host a displaced animal in your community so that these innocent animals remain loved and cared for until they can be reunited with their loved ones in their forever home.

Reach out to us. We will take care of the rest.

Help bring comfort to an innocent animal who has been displaced from their forever home and separated from their loved ones.

We're committed to placing pets who belong to incarcerated parents into temporary, loving homes away from homes. For the safety of all involved, we run background checks on all volunteer foster parents, and confirm the vaccination records of each animals prior to placement in their temporary home away from home. If not vaccination records are unavailable, we will fund the vaccinations of those animals placed in our care prior to placement with their temporary foster parents. Once the environment is deemed safe for both the innocent animal and its' temporary foster parent, we will transport the animal to it's home away with the necessary supplies to ensure that the animal stays healthy and happy in its' temporary home away from home.

How we work.

Reach out and let us know if you are interested in temporarily fostering an animal who has been displaced from their forever home. Once you've been signed up, we will reach out to you when we have an animal in our care that is need of a temporary, home away from home. For the safety of all involved, there are several safety measures we must take before placement happens. We must vet each volunteer foster parent to ensure that the displaced animals are placed in a safe environment. Upon ensuring that the temporary loving home is a safe environment, we ensure that each animal is properly vaccinated and we review their veterinary records to determine if they have any medical conditions or special needs that required heightened care. Then our organization will transport the fostered animal into its' temporary home away from home until they can be returned to their forever home.

Compassionate Care is our Priority

We are passionate about our mission to match incarcerated pets with loving foster homes. Our nonprofit provides compassionate care to displaced pets to ensure their well-being when their loved one is incarcerated and mitigate the trauma and devastation for all involved.  Contact us at 612-460-1295 to learn more about how to foster an animal in need of a temporary, loving home  away from home while their parent is incarcerated.

We Are a Community Driven Initiative

Our nonprofit relies on the financial support of our community to continue our mission of placing pets with incarcerated parents into loving foster homes. Every dollar is spent to ensure that  every animal is placed in a loving home away from home in the safest manner possible.

Please note that our organization currently only serves animals whose parents are incarcerated in the following counties: Hennepin, Ramsey, and Anoka.

F.A.Q.

I signed up to be a volunteer.  What comes next?

  • You will be contacted by one of our team members to gather additional information about your availability, home environment, and animal preferences. You will then be placed on a stand-by list for your animal of preference. When an animal is brought to us in need of a temporary loving home away from home, we will contact you to determine whether it is a suitable placement.

How can I be sure that the animal I foster is healthy?

  • Prior to foster placement, we will verify the animal's vaccination history and whether they have any special conditions or needs. We will follow-up with volunteers frequently to assess how the placement is going  and schedule brief weekly or biweekly visits to ensure that the placement is healthy for all involved.

What if I have other pets in my home?

  • Other pets will not automatically exclude someone from fostering one of our animals in need of a temporary home. When making a placement decision, we will consider both your pet and the animal's history of engaging with other animals in determining whether it is a suitable placement or not.

Do I get to choose which animal I foster?

  • When signing up, there is an option to specify the type of animal you would prefer to foster (i.e., dog, cat, or other). We will notify volunteers on standby when there is an animal is in need of a temporary home, along with information about age, breed, and any special needs of the animal to determine whether it is a suitable placement.

How long should I expect to foster an animal?

  • Length of sponsorship depends on the duration in which their loved one is incarcerated and unable to care for them. If you are unavailable to sponsor an animal for the entire duration, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may make other arrangements for the animal in need.

Are there any expenses involved with fostering an animal?

  • We will take care of everything from food to veterinary care. However, if you wish to spoil the animal you are fostering with treat and toys, have at it! We just ask that you honor any special or idiosyncratic dietary needs for the animal in your care.

Do I need to communicate with the animal's incarcerated loved one?

  • Though not required, we encourage communication between the animal's parent and the animal's foster parent. This is to mitigate anxiety for the animal's loved one by reassuring them that their pet is safe, happy, and healthy. Correspondence is also  conducive to strengthening our community driven initiative. However, if you do not feel comfortable keeping contact with the incarcerated animal's parent, our organization will serve as the messenger.

What if I have a question that is not answered here?

  • Give us a call or use the submission form above to touch base with us and ask any additional questions you might have.
